Don't Be Thomas

Day 305:

Doubting Thomas. That was the sermon for today (in a nutshell). "Show me the holes in his hands."

Being in the Duct Tape car has some advantages. One is,..as of a year ago, give or take a 3 month period, I had no audio capability. When I returned from the Mayo this Fall, my radio came to life, but the only station I could get,...Country.

I'm the kind of person that likes popular music in all areas. I enjoy the hip hop, the rap, the disco, the rcok, the hard rock, the metal rock,...but,...only some songs. If I had a mainstay in music you would say it's Classic Rock. However,..when in Rome (or the duct tape) - you listen to country!

And to bring it full circle, if you haven't heard the song 'I saw God Today,' then your missing a great one. Thomas needed to see to believe, yet todays country classic speaks to us, taking time to look. Miracles are around us,...God is around us,...daily.

Today I saw God working between Sam and I. It was a great father / son day spent eating hot wings, shopping for Kim, and 'some assembly required' as we worked at putting together a surprise for Kim.

Where did you see God?

Don't let a day go by without seeing the miracles - big or small.

Wishes and More Wishes

Day 308:

"Make A Wish! That's really neat," comments a co-worker.

I was telling that we had an appointment tonight with Make A Wish volunteers at the house. I know that Make A Wish is 'cool' and 'neat', but we would rather not have cancer - is there a wish for that?

"It's really great," I replied.

How neat that a charity is out there for kids and their families that offer what they do.

6:30PM, Harry and Sharon arrive right on time (with a small gift in hand for each kid). They are the perfect Make A Wish couple. One look at them and you know that they are giving, caring, and want to take a bad experience, like cancer, and give you a bit of sunshine.

I would have to say that just sitting and talking with them was a gift in itself. Kim said it best, "This experience is about relationships." The people you meet, the deeper bonds you develop, the outreach you experience,....it's beyond words at times.

The process for Make A Wish was painless for the most part. Hannah and Sharon had some alone time to discuss her wishes (please say new Harley, please say new Harley). Harry kept us busy with some paper work and great conversation. I think I struggled most with my age / birth date the most when it came to paperwork. It wasn't that I couldn't remember the year I was born, but more so that I kept writing out my age,...on form after form after form. I'm going to need my own Make A Wish to lift my spirits - or a big 40th birthday celebration.

Okay,... so Hannah's big choices for her wish - Give Kids the World was #1, followed closely by kitten. No wait, we got one of those! So the #2 choice is time with Hannah Montana (if it's number two, I'm hoping to get a little one on one, father to father time with Billy Ray for a little Achey Breaky recap).

It's Not JUST Basketball

Day 302:

Seems like just yesterday, when we were having our first child. I remember sitting in the hospital, holding Sam while Kim caught up on some much needed rest. I distinctly remember watching basketball game after basketball game and thinking: fatherhood is good!

Today, I'm sitting on the couch watching a Spring Blizzard outside the window blanket my dreams of sitting around the fire. But,..you know what? I'm watching basketball game after basketball game and thinking: Spring Blizzard is good!

"We're going to see the new kitty! You want to come with us?" she knew that was a silly question to begin with - there's a blizzard going on out there,....and it would require movement from the couch on my part.

"Well, you shouldn't sit there all day. Come on, don't you want to go see our newest family member?" another feeble attempt deflected by my come back of..
"I'm not just sitting here! Can't you see my arms flailing about as the refs make a bad call or the players blow an easy shot?"

So, without further ado, here's our soon to be kitten:

He seems to have that same blank stare I get from the kids after telling them we need to clean the house - perfect fit for our family!

We still haven't settled on a name, so at this point, write-ins are welcome.

As I mentioned yesterday, Hannah's been working on therapy fairly regularly. Sharon, pictured with Hannah, has a wonderful touch with Hannah and makes therapy fun for her (although I'm not sure Hannah would say 'fun', but she never complains about going).

This machine holds kernels that move around Hannah's arm and works on desensitizing her scar.

Foto Friday (Thursday)

Foto Friday comes a Day Early - it's March Madness,... I can't be expected to get this out after a night of basketball, Good Friday,....and more basketball.

Hannah has been working the therapy A LOT! Her pinkie finger is still not responding to the splints - it will start to straighten, but then inevitably revert back to the curl position. As for the hand being able to turn palm up, we're seeing progress. It's hard to tell though since we haven't been down this road before we're not quite sure what to expect.

Able to Watch TV14 - another milestone reached.

Make It Different

"I don't even like basketball," jeers one student.

"Nobody in my family watches basketball!" another chimes in, as if I had just called for an opinion poll.

"Why Mr. Kelly????? WHY?!" the cries begin to catch hold around the room, like pockets of piranha ready to attack.

This morning, being the day after the day after selection day for the NCAA tournament, was a perfect time to hand out the brackets to ALL of my students (despite the ones that shot me the 'no thanks, I'll pass' look).

"Boys and Girls!" I gave it my best 'morning, excited to be at school voice.' "Today we're going to fill out our March Madness brackets," I said this with a grin. I always have smile around this time of year - not really sure if it's because I get to watch a lot of basketball, the weather finally takes a turn for the warmer (which means its time to get the bike out), or if it's because St. Patrick's Day has arrived (and it's Sam's birthday). In either case,...March is Good!

"YES!!" comes a voice from the back of the room. A boy who not only brought his own bracket from home, but a magazine detailing the teams.

As I explained the 'how to' part of the bracket, the students grew more interested (especially when I mentioned that the winner of the tournament would be given a GIANT BAR OF CHOCOLATE). Along with the bracketeering, comes the math (probability and statistics). What better way to wrap up our unit of percents, probability, and stats than to put it to the test in a real life application. DISCLAIMER: WE WILL NOT BE WATCHING THE GAMES IN CLASS FOR ENJOYMENT! IT WILL BE PURELY FOR THE MATHEMATICAL CALCULATIONS THAT WILL SOMEDAY PROPEL THE STUDENTS TO HEIGHTS OF GREATNESS.

Room 110: Once again moving every child everyday from good to great through the sheer enjoyment of good collegiate competition.

Good News

Day 292:

Danielle came out of surgery with the doctors indicating an infection. They still have to send it off to pathology for the final word, but everything points away from cancer! It's just about all I can do to not cancel the rest of today and have a free for all - and since I'm currently in the middle of a magnetic science experiment with the kids, it seems that we've already accomplished the free for all portion.

I did some research early this morning to find out more about an Open Lung Biopsy. From what I've read, which has been extensive in my five minute period between students coming and asking if there will be extra recess today since the temperature has actually reached the 40's,.... an Open Lung Biopsy is an incision between the ribs to remove a piece of lung tissue. The recovery on something like this is not the most comfortable with breathing normally being one of the downsides. Yet, when the results are NOT cancer,... rough breathing for a while is a lot easier to deal with.

Thanks for your prayers.

Examining Danielle

Day 290:

Just when you think you have it all figured out,... well, the doctors are still trying to figure it all out with Danielle. Unfortunately, the biopsy that they originally took wasn't conclusive enough to determine a fungus, cancer, or something in the 'other' column, once everything was said and done,... so they are going to an Open Lung Biopsy tomorrow morning. The plan seems to be to go in a remove the mass and find out exactly what they are dealing with.

Please keep Danielle, her family, and the doctors in your prayers tonight and tomorrow.

So, What's Easter?

The meaning of Easter.

I sat at my desk this morning in utter amazement,.... stunned by the fact that a mass email was sent out to our staff regarding a web site that shares the meaning of Easter in the form of a cartoon book (along with other Internet Easter activities), with the intent of teachers sharing it with their students.

The story is about animal friends on Easter morning. One animal sees all the different animals dressed in their new clothes and thinks that is what Easter is about (new clothing). Thank goodness though, his friend straightens him out and tells him that Easter is about more than just new clothes,... it's about summer coming, the warm weather, and joy and love in the air. The first little animal was so excited to realize that Easter is about more than just dressing up in new clothes, he runs off to share the good news with everyone. The End.

You probably remember the expression, 'Missed the Boat." Well, sad to say there's not even water around on this one. Sadly though, there may be some teachers out there who actually use this as a lesson about Easter.

The News is Out

Day 286:

Greetings and blessings - the wonderful news is spreading through the Midwest and beyond, prayers have been answered and Danielle is Cancer free!

We received the news this morning via email, Carepage, and phone calls,... "..inflammation needs to be further investigated through the Infectious Disease doctors." When you know it's NOT cancer, you can handle anything.

Keep the family and Danielle's condition in your prayers. We'll keep you updated.

Thursday, heard in room 110:
"Did you read the note from my mom?" asks a student after throwing a note on my desk moments earlier.
"No," I replied, not wanting to give it much weight in the grand scheme of my morning where lunch count and attendance take precedence along with reminding kids to tie their shoes.

The child stares at me for what seems like minutes, but was more like 20 seconds (probably deciding if the move to press on is the best choice), "Well, it's from my mom and it's important."
"If it's that important she should have called," I explained, hoping that would throw her further into a state of anxiousness.

"But she didn't call,.... she wrote A NOTE," the girl pleads, just wanting me to unfold the paper and glance in the direction of the text.
"Yes she did,... I see it right here," I explained calmly, glancing down at the paper. "But you see, what you fail to realize is that I've declared Thursday a 'no note' day. Therefore, I won't be reading it today," I explain my bizarre reason for personal pleasure. It's like fishing,... once you have them on the hook you want to make a sport of it before reeling 'em in.

"Since when do you have a 'no note' day?" her posture shifts to a more authoritative stance, as if she had me on a technicality.
"Since I typed it in my 'Friday Take Home Note' on Tuesday, but yet won't be released until Friday, but is still in effect for this Thursday since last Thursday was a day before Leap Day and all," it seemed like a good response. (note to self to write up new policy for Friday Take Home Note)

"What????? Ohhhh,.... you're being difficult! Just forget it!" The little girl turns and walks away towards her friends, seeking reassurance that I've lost it.
"And so Thursday begins! Now who's up for Fish Nuggets for lunch?"

In Our Prayers

Day 284:

It's been a while since I posted with a 'day number'. Strange to look at when I think back over all that we have been through with the help of God and the support and prayers of friends and family. It seems fitting to post the number with the news of last night.

"Did you read Danielle's Carepage?" the first words out of Kim's mouth as I drove home from work yesterday talking to her over the phone.

"No," I remembered that she had went through a CT scan and they had seen a small spot on her lung. Protocol, from my limited understanding, is to wait about six weeks and re-scan to see if there's any change.

Spots can be caused for a variety of reasons (fungus, virus, water,...), so to have one is probably common in most people, but to have one when you're a cancer survivor is something that makes you stop in your tracks. We've already been down this road. We've already walked the walk. We just want to be left alone at this point and not have to face another 'what if.'

"Her scan showed the spot again, and it seems to have gotten a bit bigger," Kim went on to read me the Carepage posting. Danielle is going in today for a biopsy, bone scan, and spine MRI.

The doctors won't know anything regarding the biopsy until the end of the week. Keep Danielle and her family in your prayers as they go through the procedures today and the outcome this week.

March Madness

More than a dream, "Somebody pinch me. It's March Madness!"

Most teachers and students are on the count down to Spring Break,.... I can't wait that long - I'm on the March Madness Count Down! I have 14 days to St. Pat's Day and another 18 to the start of the field of 64 (I know,.. really 17 days to the field of 65. Okay,... actually 13 days to Announcement Show).

Hannah AND Sam were both in the Free Throw contest - along with a number of Trinity students. It was a lot of fun to watch the kids in the shoot out as they tried to best themselves in a 20 shot free throw contest. Just more basketball to entertain myself with!

Three and Counting

They say that bad things come in threes,...who are they?...and what type of counting system are they using because we went well past three.

#1: Tuesday Night
Garage door snaps with a clatter and clunk. My garage, which holds a plaque on it's front wall, was built by the 'neighbor hood' in 1950,... which makes my doors solid wood panels that have weathered the test of time for 58 years. It was a good fifty plus years. The bad thing is that I now must put my wants on hold to attend to the needs. I don't know about you, but I love my wants and just sort of like my needs.

#2: Wednesday Morning
I'm driving the one eyed wonder. Yep,....the headlight blew out (POOF! gone......). This is normally not a big deal, but I'm in the process of looking for my wallet, so getting pulled over would not be a good thing. You see, the problem with living in Mayberry is not the crime, it's what law enforcement does during the down time - like pulling over people with only one headlight.

#3: Friday Morning
You're all familiar with the infamous duct tape car. Well, then this may surprise you to know that it is virtually theft proof. When it comes to locking my keys on the inside, there's no chance of breaking in to get them!

Reminder to self: Must call tow truck guy to unlock the door for small fee of first born child.

#4: Friday Night
Crack is bad. You're familiar with this slogan used often by plumbers. Well, it's not just for the water movers anymore. Unbeknownst to us all, there's a massive crack streaming across the windshield.

#5: Saturday Night

Returning from a shopping spree in which I came away with one bottle of shower gel - aka 'manly scent', we hit a pot hole that was reminiscent of the sand creature in Star Wars (the one that swallowed people whole). No kidding,... this thing was not only big but it pulled the rubber right off the rim.

As if that wasn't enough, by the time we got the tire switched out for a lesser spare tire that sported a whopping 10 lbs of air,.. I lost a lug nut. A LUG NUT! I don't know,... it was there, and then it was gone.

#6: Sunday Afternoon
Assuming there's nothing left to due but wait for the new garage doors, get a new tire put on, and pray that the duct tape car can last long enough to become a classic.

Not so fast. While attempting to free my car from the garage in order to follow Kim to the local tire store, the garage door decided to self-destruct, causing an entire section to break free and drop right onto my snow blower.

Now we can't end this on a bad note, so I'll leave you with this: While driving around today in search of a lug nut,...that's right A LUG NUT, at various auto stores, the oil light came on several times. Luckily when we returned home I remembered the flashing red light and popped the hood and ripped the dip stick.

I never knew a car could run on pure love alone, but apparently mine can. It was bone dry. No oil what-so-ever! I thought not having the emissions pouring from the tailpipe was a good thing, but then again, there's many reasons that I'm not a mechanic.

Peace and Prayers
